Importance of assessment

Assessment is both a science and an art. The science is understanding exactly where a child is in their learning journey and then identifying the building blocks they need next.

The art is recognising that progress isn’t always a straight line. Children can forget things they once knew, lose confidence, or need to revisit earlier steps. Sometimes a key piece of understanding is still a bit shaky, making new tasks feel too hard for them. The role of anyone supporting a child’s learning is to spot those gaps, strengthen the foundations, and help learning feel achievable and enjoyable again.

How the website can help

To support accurate assessment, the resources on the website are organised into categories, groups, and worksheets. There are six categories in both maths and English. When you open a category, you’ll see the groups within it, and each group contains a set of worksheets. Everything is arranged in a clear progression, moving from simple concepts to more complex skills. This structure makes it easy to pinpoint where a child is secure, where they may need more practice, and what to introduce next.

Each worksheet page includes information about the key knowledge and skills a child needs in order to complete it successfully.  The 'more worksheets' section also highlights other areas that link well with the one you’re working on.

Choose a worksheet that seems like a reasonable starting point and give it a try. If your child can complete it confidently, move forward. If it feels too challenging, simply step back to an earlier worksheet to strengthen the foundations. And, if a child needs a challenge, it’s fine to do new topics they haven’t even touched on in school.
