Antonyms and synonyms

  • An antonym is a word that means the opposite of a given word eg tall, short
  • Synonyms are words that have the same or similar meanings eg big, huge, massive, great and bulky
  • Some synonyms can be swapped in a sentence and it will still make sense (huge and massive)
  • Some synonyms can’t be swapped as the sentence will then not really make sense (great and bulky)
  • Knowledge of synonyms and antonyms helps to build up vocabulary, aids comprehension and makes writing more interesting
