Counting, ordering & place value
- Counting and ordering are easier concepts than other topics such as adding/subtracting
- Larger numbers can be counted and ordered until children are ready for the other topics
- Numbers and symbols can be written or printed out if writing is difficult
- Being able to order numbers is essential for developing mental maths skills and performing simple addition & subtraction
- Partitioning numbers leads to the concept of place value (the idea that a digit’s position in a number determines its value)
- Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of larger numbers all require a clear understanding of place value
