Counting, ordering & place value

  • Counting and ordering are easier concepts than other topics such as adding/subtracting
  • Larger numbers can be counted and ordered until children are ready for the other topics
  • Numbers and symbols can be written or printed out if writing is difficult
  • Being able to order numbers is essential for developing mental maths skills and performing simple addition & subtraction
  • Partitioning numbers leads to the concept of place value (the idea that a digit’s position in a number determines its value)
  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of larger numbers all require a clear understanding of place value
