Fractions

  • A fraction is a part of a whole number or whole shape
  • Fractions have a numerator and a denominator
  • The denominator (bottom number) shows how many equal parts the number or shape has been divided into - ¼ means 4 equal parts
  • The numerator shows how many parts of the fraction are involved – ¼ means one of the 4 parts
  • Fractions which are more than one whole are called improper fractions or mixed numbers
  • Fractions can be added, subtracted, multiplied and divided and converted into decimals and percentages
