Poems & songs

  • The main difference between poems and songs is that poems are read as words while songs have a melody (musical tune) to go with the words
  • There are many similarities - both have stanzas or verses (not paragraphs), often repeat phrases and have a rhyme scheme & a rhythym (pattern of beats of the syllables)
  • Comprehension of a poem or song not only refers to understanding its literal meaning but also involves connecting with its imagery, tone and rhythm
  • It is helpful for children to both ask & answer questions about poems & songs to develop comprehension
  • This should be done orally before writing
  • Reading poems and the lyrics of songs can encourage children to make their own compositions
