Poetic devices

  • Similes and metaphors are strong poetic devices for creating pictures in the mind

  • Rhyme schemes where the ends of lines rhyme and rhythm which is the pattern of beats of syllables are other poetic devices

  • In addition personification gives human qualities to things that aren’t human—like animals, objects, or even nature – ‘Lightning danced across the sky.’

  • Alliteration uses the same sound to start words – ‘An annoying ant bit my ankle.’

  • Onomatopoeia uses words that sound like the noise something makes – ‘The door banged shut.’

  • CRAFT – similes with 'as'
