Prefixes

  • A prefix is a group of letters added to the beginning of a word to change its meaning such as ‘un
  • Prefixes can change the word into its opposite (happy to unhappy)
  • Indicate time/order (view to preview) or quantify  (cycle to bicycle)
  • Add direction or position (marine to submarine) or show repetition (do to redo)
  • Prefixes are highlighted pink on the worksheets
  • Words can be broken into syllables - un/hap/py - which supports both reading and spelling
  • READ/SPELL – prefix ‘un’
