Apostrophes

  • An apostrophe looks like this  ‘
  • Apostrophes are used for two purposes – contraction and possession
  • An apostrophe of contraction makes two words (eg. can and not) join together into one word (can’t) by taking out some letters and putting the apostrophe in their place
  • An apostrophe of possession shows that something belongs to something else such as 'the girl’s dress' (the dress belongs to the girl)
