- When we measure how heavy something is we are measuring its mass but often the word weight is used
- Concrete experiences of measuring the mass of objects using non-standard units will greatly help in developing a sense of mass
- This should be done before standard units are introduced
- Non-standard units are things like blocks, coins, pasta pieces
