• Vowels are the five letters ‘a’, ‘e’, ‘i’, ‘o’, ‘u’

• The name of the vowel is used in ‘magic e’ words rather than the phonetic sound it makes

• The names of the vowels can be referred to when spelling non-phonetic words and where two or more letters make one sound
