Names and order of letters of the alphabet

  • Vowels are the five letters ‘a’, ‘e’, ‘i’, ‘o’, ‘u’
  • Consonants are all the letters of the alphabet that are not vowels: b, c, d, f, g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z
  • Sometimes the name of the letter needs to be referred to rather than the phonetic sound it makes
  • This is the case in ‘magic e’ words, non-phonetic words and where two or more letters make one sound
  • Knowing alphabet order is an important skill for filing and retrieving information
